For me, travel has always been about family.
In my over 20 years as a travel advisor, the most satisfying trips to plan are multigenerational ones that help families stay connected.
My first trip as a mother came when my son was 2 months old. It was the first of our annual Disney trips when my children were at home.
Though I’ll never forget that first trip, my favorite trip with my son was an Alaska cruise on an expedition ship now part of Un-Cruise Adventures. No stops in towns, just hiking and kayaking. The most memorable moment was coming around a bend in the river in a kayak and being greeted by a bear.
With my daughter, it was a trip to Italy when she was in middle school. It was the first time there for both of us, and it sparked a love of travel in general and Italy in particular in her. Italy has that effect on a lot of people. She studied Italian in college and spent a summer internship in Florence because of that trip.
My favorite trip with my mom was a Baltic Cruise on Crystal. Spending three days in St. Petersburg was the highlight, and she still talks about going to the ballet there.
It's harder to pick a favorite trip with my husband because we have had so many great ones. Peru was probably the most surprising destination because of how much we both loved it. My favorite accomplishment with him was climbing Huayna Picchu.
My husband is also something of an oenophile and collector. I affectionately refer to him as a wino and hoarder. The trips where we meet winemakers, talk about and drink great wine are always wonderful. Napa, Bordeaux and Burgundy all have a special place in my heart. Add in great food, and it’s no wonder why we enjoy Europe and especially river cruising so much.
Because I'm a Kansas girl, I've never met a beach I didn't love. Hawaii holds a special place in my heart and has been the destination for multiple trips. I can't wait to share it with my granddaughter.
