Dominican Republic

Samana, a peninsula on the northeast corner of the Dominican Republic surrounded by beautiful beaches and waterfalls, is finally being discovered after being one of the best kept secrets in the Caribbean. This little corner of paradise has been off the radar since there were previously no direct flights from the US, necessitating the inconvenience of a four hour drive from other airports. Jet Blue is now offering direct flights to the resort area from Charlotte.

For the adventurous traveler, Samana offers great outdoor activities. There are limestone caves to be discovered in Haitises National Park , horseback trekking to Salto El Limon, and boat tours for seeing whales and other spectacular marine life. Thousands of humpback whales (link) return to the Bay of Samana from January to March every year to mate and give birth. The mangrove swamps protect manatees, bats, tortoises and more than 100 species of birds and the coral reefs are home to scores of marine fish and turtles.

Samana offers guest accomodations from bed-and breakfasts in Las Terrenas to exclusive hotels like Balcones Del Atlantico (link). Balcones del Atlantico is the newest luxury resort in the Dominican Republic . The resort is only a few miles from Las Terrenas (link) , a town with shops and international restaurants. The resort is comprised of villa suites that come with a full gourmet kitchen, contemporarily decorated living rooms, and wide terraces that offer lush views of the surrounds. Penthouse villas offer full rooftop access with private Jacuzzii while Town House are built with two levels that sleep up to 8 people and offer a private plunge pool. The beachfront restaurant, Porto, serves fresh, local ingredients providing a authentic culinary experience. From Balcones, you can easily get to Las Terrenas for great shopping and dining, take horseback rides to El Limon Waterfalls, take boat excursions to Los Haitises National Park, or soar over the jungle on a zip line tour. This undiscovered gem is a great destination for weddings, family trips, eco-tours, and culinary travelers.
