Afternoon teas, powdered wigs, British decorum all on an island that is closer to Atlanta than to London. Since the island is only 20 miles long, everyone knows each other and greets one another so warmly. Not only fun for families, but Bermuda is one of the best places in the world for a honeymoon or a romantic occasion. North Carolina is Bermuda's closest neighbor and there is a direct (2 hr.) flight from Charlotte. Bermuda was slow in colonization because people couldn't find it. When they found it, it was usually after foundering on reefs for miles out. People that wrecked on the reefs, spent five months to a year rebuilding their ship. Then they got away. Hogs were put on the islands, deliberately and as victims of shipwrecks, providing eventually a handy maritime pork store. The first money coined on Bermuda after it finally did get some colony action going had pictures of hogs engraved on every piece and was called hog money.
